Overview
The Munson Hills Off-Road Trail is the closest significant trail to Tallahassee within Apalachicola National Forest, and it has developed a devoted local following among mountain bikers and trail runners who value the open longleaf pine character and the consistent trail quality. The 9.4-mile outer loop traverses longleaf flatwoods maintained by prescribed fire, with the open understory and distant sight lines that distinguish healthy longleaf ecosystem from dense, closed-canopy second-growth.
The trail has multiple inner-loop options: a 2-mile connector and a 5-mile intermediate loop: allowing visitors to customize the distance based on time and fitness. The outer full loop is the most representative of the forest's character.
The Route
Miles 0.0 to 2.5: Trailhead to Inner Junction
From the trailhead gravel lot, the trail enters longleaf flatwoods through a clear, orange-blazed entrance. The first section is the firmest footing on the loop, with packed sand and pine needle duff. At mile 0.8, a junction marks the inner 2-mile loop. Continue straight for the outer loop. Gopher tortoise burrows are frequent: active burrows are occupied and protected.
Miles 2.5 to 6.0: Outer Loop West and South
The western and southern sections of the outer loop are the most remote-feeling. The longleaf stands here are older, with larger trees and a denser wiregrass understory. A few sand sections require pushing a bike or slowing significantly on foot. At mile 4.5, the trail passes near a large pitcher plant bog visible from the trail edge: do not leave the trail to approach the bog.
Miles 6.0 to 9.4: Northern Return
The northern return section has the most root-laced terrain on the loop. The trail passes through a transitional zone with some hardwood mixed into the pine before returning to the trailhead.
When to Use
October through April: The ideal season. Comfortable temperatures, firm sand, and minimal insects. The prescribed fire season can produce smoke in the forest in winter: check conditions before visiting.
May through September: Hot and humid. Insects are intense. Trail runners and fast-moving bikers may use the trail in early mornings, but extended hikes are not recommended in summer heat.
What to Bring
No water on trail: carry everything from the trailhead. 2 liters for the full outer loop in cool weather, more in warm months. Bug repellent from March through October. A tire kit for bikers. Trail shoes with moderate tread (not deep-lugged, not smooth-soled) work best on the variable sand surface.
Trailhead Access
Munson Hills Trailhead is on Munson Slough Road off FL-363 south of Tallahassee. The road to the trailhead is paved. Large gravel parking lot, free. Vault toilets. No permit required (as of 2026). Dogs welcome on leash.
Nearby
The Leon Sinks Geological Area Loop is about 10 miles south on US-319 and provides a completely different sinkhole geology experience on the same day. The Florida National Scenic Trail Apalachicola Segment is in the forest interior to the west. Check current conditions for prescribed burn closures and review Leave No Trace principles: stay on trail to protect pitcher plant bogs and gopher tortoise burrows.
