Overview
Rock Bridge is one of the most unusual arches in the Red River Gorge because it spans an active stream. Swift Camp Creek flows beneath the natural bridge, making it a true arch-over-water formation. The surrounding loop in Daniel Boone National Forest passes through a hemlock and rhododendron hollow that stays green through winter, giving this trail a different character from the sandstone ridge routes elsewhere in the Gorge.
The trailhead on Rock Bridge Road sees less traffic than the main Koomer Ridge and Nada Tunnel trailheads, making it one of the better options for a quieter Red River Gorge experience.
The Route
Miles 0.0 to 0.5: Trailhead to Hollow Entry
The trail drops from the road into the Swift Camp Creek hollow, descending through mixed hardwood and rhododendron. The path is clear and well-maintained.
Miles 0.5 to 1.0: Creek Section and Rock Bridge
The trail follows the creek upstream before reaching Rock Bridge at approximately mile 0.8. The arch spans the creek from bank to bank; you can walk beneath it on stepping stones or cross on the arch itself. The hemlock canopy above the creek gives this section a cool, sheltered quality even in summer.
Miles 1.0 to 2.0: Loop Return
After the arch, the trail climbs away from the creek on the loop's upper portion and returns to the trailhead through drier oak and hickory forest. The climb is modest and distributed over the full return mile.
When to Hike
March through May brings wildflowers to the hollow floor and full flow in Swift Camp Creek. The hemlock canopy begins to show new growth.
June through August the hollow stays cool. This is a particularly good summer trail because of the shade and creek presence.
October through November offers fall color above the hollow and reflections in the creek.
December through February the evergreen hemlock and rhododendron remain striking. The creek may freeze in cold snaps.
What to Bring
Many hikers carry 1 to 1.5 liters of water for this shorter loop. Creek water is present but requires filtering. Waterproof shoes or sandals with good grip are practical given the creek crossings. No restroom at the trailhead; plan accordingly.
Trailhead Access
The Rock Bridge trailhead is located on Rock Bridge Road off KY-715 in the Red River Gorge area. No fee to park or hike (as of 2026). The small pullout lot has no facilities. Dogs must be leashed. Dispersed camping is possible along the creek with proper setback from the water.
Nearby
Koomer Ridge Sheltowee Loop is accessible via a short drive and provides a longer ridge experience. Angel Windows Trail sits nearby on Sky Bridge Road for a different short geological walk.
Check road and creek conditions at checking conditions before you go before visiting, as Rock Bridge Road can be muddy after rain and the creek crossings can be challenging in high water. Practice Leave No Trace principles along the creek where campsites and foot traffic have historically caused bank erosion.
