Overview

The Council Bluff Lake Loop is an easy 3-mile circuit around a 900-acre reservoir in the Potosi Ranger District of Mark Twain National Forest. The lake is the largest body of water in the forest and the recreation area surrounding it is one of the most developed, making this a good starting point for families and first-time visitors to the forest.

The trail stays close to the lake shoreline for much of its length, offering consistent water views through the oak-hickory forest. The terrain is gently rolling, with a total elevation gain of just 200 feet over 3 miles. Most sections of the loop are well-maintained natural surface, with some paved segments near the recreation area facilities.

Council Bluff Lake is a good fishing lake stocked regularly by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Largemouth bass, crappie, and channel catfish are the main species. The Forest Service manages the campground with 53 sites on the north shore, making this a convenient loop for campers who want a short morning or evening walk.

The Route

Miles 0 to 1: From the recreation area parking lot, the loop starts on the paved trail near the boat ramp and picnic area. The trail transitions to natural surface within the first quarter mile. The west shore of the lake is open with views across the water.

Miles 1 to 2: The north section of the loop passes through the campground area. The trail is wide and easy through this section. A fishing pier on the north shore provides a good vantage point across the lake.

Miles 2 to 3: The east shore return passes through denser oak-hickory forest. A short spur near mile 2.5 leads to a bench with a lake view. The loop closes back at the parking area.

When to Visit

April through November covers the main season. Spring wildflowers along the trail are good in April. Fall color, reflected in the lake, is the visual highlight plan for late October for peak color. Summer is popular but hot. Check conditions for any seasonal restrictions.

What to Bring

  • Water is available at the recreation area. Carry a bottle for the loop.
  • Sunscreen for the exposed lakeside sections
  • Tick repellent from April through October
  • A Missouri fishing license if planning to fish
