Overview

The Hog Pen Landing Trail reaches the quiet western shore of Ocean Pond, Osceola National Forest's 1,760-acre natural sinkhole lake, at a location well away from the busier Ocean Pond Campground. The 3-mile out-and-back is flat and easy, passing through pine flatwoods before opening onto the lake shore at Hog Pen Landing, where a small primitive camping area provides vault toilets and water access.

The trail is primarily used by campers at the landing and by day visitors who prefer a quieter lake experience. Fishing from the landing shore is productive; the western end of the lake receives less angling pressure than the campground side. Kayaks and canoes can be launched from the landing.

No permit is required. Vault toilet at the landing.

The Route

Miles 0 to 1.5: Flatwoods approach. The trail begins in typical longleaf pine flatwoods and progresses gradually toward the lake, with the vegetation becoming slightly denser and more moisture-loving as the trail approaches the shore.

At mile 1.5, the trail reaches Hog Pen Landing and the lake opens up. The landing is a gravel shore area with room for several paddlecraft. Views across Ocean Pond to the far shore are unobstructed.

Return by the same route.

When to Hike

October through April: Most comfortable. The lake views are good year-round.

Year-round: This is a viable morning walk in any season, with early mornings being the best time for wildlife on the lake.

What to Bring

Many hikers carry 1 liter of water. No water available at the trailhead or on the trail; fill at the Ocean Pond Campground before hiking.

Trailhead Access

The recommended season for this trail is Year-round (October through April preferred). Conditions outside this window may include challenging weather, trail closures, or reduced accessibility. Always verify current conditions with the Osceola National Forest ranger district before visiting, particularly at the beginning and end of the recommended season when conditions are most variable.

The lake provides a visual focus for the trail and is a good birding location in the early morning hours. The water feature along this trail supports a range of wildlife; keep pets on leash near the water. Wildlife is present throughout the forest. Maintain distance from any animals encountered on or near the trail.

Before any visit, review the Leave No Trace seven principles and our checking conditions guide for current fire restrictions, trail closures, and ranger district advisories. The America the Beautiful pass covers day use fees at developed recreation areas where applicable. Veterans and active military have additional access options covered in our veteran benefits guide.
