Overview

The Talladega Scenic Byway Walk follows a 5-mile out-and-back section of the Pinhoti National Recreation Trail along a quartzite ridge adjacent to AL-281 in Talladega National Forest. The route samples the Pinhoti's ridgeline character in the heart of the forest's highland terrain, with open rocky sections providing long views west across Alabama's ridge-and-valley country.

This trail offers a practical way to experience the Pinhoti Trail without the vehicle shuttle required for the full 12-mile Cheaha section. The trailhead is accessible directly from the Talladega Scenic Byway. No permit required.

The Route

Miles 0 to 1.5: Forest approach to the ridge. The trail leaves the AL-281 pullout and climbs through mixed hardwood forest. The lower section is enclosed and shaded, gaining most of the elevation in the first 1.5 miles before the trail breaks onto the upper ridge.

Miles 1.5 to 2.5: Ridgeline section. The trail reaches exposed quartzite outcrops on the ridge crest, with views extending west and southwest across the Alabama ridge-and-valley terrain. The rocky sections require attention to footing, particularly on wet quartzite. This is the most open and scenic section of the route.

Turnaround at mile 2.5 at a natural overlook point where the trail begins descending toward the Adams Gap trailhead area.

When to Hike

October: Peak fall color with the best ridge views of the year. Typically clear air and comfortable temperatures.

March through May: Spring wildflowers on the slopes and fresh visibility before summer haze builds. Good birding during the neotropical migration.

Year-round: The moderate distance and accessible byway trailhead make this hikeable in most conditions.

What to Bring

Many hikers carry 1.5 to 2 liters of water. No water source at or near the trailhead. The rocky ridge sections benefit from hiking boots with good grip. Trekking poles are helpful on the descent from the ridgeline.

Trailhead Access

The trailhead pullout is on AL-281 (the Talladega Scenic Byway) between Adams Gap and the Cheaha State Park entrance. The pullout is signed as a Pinhoti Trail access point. From Anniston, take AL-21 south to AL-281 east. The trailhead is about 12 miles from Anniston.

Nearby

The Cheaha Trail is the more demanding summit route in the same area. The Pinhoti Trail: Cheaha Section covers the full 12-mile version of this ridge terrain as a point-to-point. The McDill Point Loop near Lake Chinnabee Recreation Area is another moderate option with ridge views. See the full Talladega National Forest guide. Follow Leave No Trace principles on the summit ridge. Review our checking conditions guide before your visit.

Trailhead Parking

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Talladega Scenic Byway?
The Talladega Scenic Byway is a designated scenic drive along AL-281 through the Cheaha Mountain area of Talladega National Forest. The byway passes through the forest's most topographically dramatic terrain, offering views from the road and access to several trailheads, picnic areas, and overlooks. The drive between Cheaha State Park and Adams Gap covers the core of the byway.
Is this trail part of the Pinhoti Trail?
Yes. This route follows the Pinhoti National Recreation Trail along the ridge adjacent to the byway. The Pinhoti runs 172 miles through Alabama before continuing into Georgia. This section provides an accessible 5-mile sample of the Pinhoti's ridgeline character without the vehicle shuttle required for the full Cheaha section point-to-point.
How does this trail compare to the Cheaha Trail?
The Cheaha Trail is more demanding and leads to the actual summit of Alabama's highest point. The Scenic Byway Walk is a moderate ridgeline hike that samples the Pinhoti Trail's views and rocky character with less total commitment. Both are in the same area of the forest and share the same general terrain, but the Cheaha Trail is the signature challenge and this route is a solid introduction.
