Overview

The Owl Creek Trail is the most accessible strenuous day hike in the Uncompahgre National Forest near Ridgway, climbing a wide creek canyon through dense aspen and spruce forest to Owl Creek Pass on the boundary with the Cimarron Ridge. The 12.0-mile round trip is demanding but starts from a 2WD-accessible trailhead, making it available to a wider range of visitors than the high-clearance routes in the southern Cimarrons.

The lower canyon section is forested and creek-adjacent, providing shade and the sound of moving water for the first several miles. The upper canyon opens into meadows before reaching the pass. Views from the pass take in the Mount Sneffels Wilderness to the west, one of the most dramatic roadside wilderness views in Colorado.

The Route

Miles 0 to 3: Lower Owl Creek. Gradual grade through a wide canyon with multiple creek crossings. Dense aspen and cottonwood forest. Wildlife-watching is good in the meadow openings, particularly for deer and elk.

Miles 3 to 5: Canyon narrows. The canyon walls steepen and the grade increases. The forest shifts from aspen to spruce-fir as elevation rises.

Miles 5 to 6: Pass approach. Open meadows and a final push to Owl Creek Pass at 10,114 feet. The pass is on the divide between the Cimarron and Uncompahgre drainages.

When to Visit

Fall color makes late September the scenic peak. Summer offers cooler temperatures and reliable water in the creek. Spring (May-June) can be muddy in the lower canyon.

Practical Details

The access road is gravel and accessible by 2WD in dry conditions. Vault toilet at the trailhead. Creek water available throughout; treat before drinking. For shorter alternatives in the same area, see the Pine Creek Trail and the forest guide.

Leave No Trace

This trail receives enough use that following Leave No Trace principles is important for preserving the experience for future visitors. Stay on the marked trail to prevent erosion. Pack out all waste. Avoid camping within 200 feet of water sources or the trail. Use existing fire rings only where campfires are permitted, and check current fire restrictions at checking conditions before you go before any visit. The trail and surrounding terrain remain in good condition because previous visitors have respected these norms.

Safety Considerations

The strenuous rating reflects the trail's general character under typical conditions. Weather, seasonal snow, and trail conditions can change the experience significantly. Carry the 10 Essentials on any full-day outing. Inform someone of your plans and expected return time before heading out, particularly on longer or more remote trails. Cell service varies throughout Uncompahgre National Forest and may be unreliable in canyon bottoms or remote terrain.

Trailhead Parking

Owl Creek Trailhead off Owl Creek Pass Road (CR-8) east of Ridgway. Gravel road, 2WD accessible. Space for 15-20 vehicles with a small day-use area.
