Overview

The Covered Bridge Trail is the gateway hike to the Marietta Unit of Wayne National Forest, a compact 2.5-mile loop through the Little Muskingum River floodplain near one of Ohio's last collections of historical covered bridges. The terrain is nearly flat, the trail is well-maintained, and the river provides constant ambient sound and fishing access throughout. This is a good choice for families, older hikers, or anyone wanting a low-key exploration of the Marietta Unit.

No permit is required.

The Route

Miles 0 to 1.0: River floodplain. From the campground trailhead, the loop enters the floodplain forest along the Little Muskingum River. Sycamore, cottonwood, and silver maple line the river margins. The river is visible and accessible at multiple points. In April and May, migrating warblers move through the riparian corridor in impressive numbers.

Miles 1.0 to 1.8: Upland section. The trail briefly ascends to drier upland terrain above the floodplain, passing through oak and hickory forest on a low ridge above the river. Views back down to the river corridor are available through gaps in the canopy.

Miles 1.8 to 2.5: Return. The loop descends back to the floodplain and returns to the campground along a different river access path.

When to Hike

April and May offer the best bird activity and the river at full flow. Spring wildflowers are modest on the floodplain but noticeable in the upland section.

September and October bring fall color and good fishing conditions. The Covered Bridge Scenic Byway is popular for fall foliage driving in the same area.

What to Bring

Many hikers carry 1 liter of water. Restrooms are available at the campground. Fishing gear is worth bringing. Waterproof shoes are recommended in spring.

Trailhead Access

From Marietta, take State Route 26 east into Washington County. The Covered Bridge Campground is about 25 miles from Marietta. The scenic byway passes through this area and is well-signed.

Practical Details

No permit is required for day hiking on this trail. Dogs are welcome on leash. Vault restrooms are available at the trailhead. Water sources are present along the trail but require treatment before drinking. Cell service is limited in this area; downloading offline maps before your visit is recommended.

The recommended season for this trail is April through October. Conditions outside this window may include challenging weather, trail closures, or reduced accessibility. Always verify current conditions with the Wayne National Forest ranger district before visiting, particularly at the beginning and end of the recommended season when conditions are most variable.

Before any visit, review the Leave No Trace seven principles and our checking conditions guide for current fire restrictions, trail closures, and ranger district advisories. Frequently Asked Questions

Are there actual covered bridges near this trail?
Yes. The Marietta Unit of Wayne National Forest sits in Washington County, which preserves several of Ohio's remaining covered bridges from the 19th century. The Hune Bridge and Knowlton Bridge are both within a few miles of the campground and worth a side trip by car. The Covered Bridge Scenic Byway (State Route 26) passes through this area and is designated as one of Ohio's scenic byways.
Can I fish the Little Muskingum River from the Covered Bridge Trail?
Yes. The trail provides access to the Little Muskingum River, which is a well-regarded smallmouth bass fishery. The river also holds rock bass, sunfish, and occasional channel catfish. An Ohio fishing license is required (as of 2026). The river runs through national forest land in this section, so public access is unrestricted.
Is the Covered Bridge Trail appropriate for a first-time national forest visit?
The Covered Bridge Trail is one of the most beginner-friendly hikes in Wayne National Forest. The loop is short, the terrain is nearly flat, and the trail starts and ends at a developed campground with facilities. It provides a genuine national forest experience without significant physical demands, making it a good introduction for those new to national forest hiking.
