Overview

The Ratcliff Lake Loop circles 45-acre Ratcliff Lake in Davy Crockett National Forest, combining lake views with mixed Pineywoods forest on a flat, easy circuit that works for hikers of all experience levels. The lake was created in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the recreation area retains the character of that era: a sandy swimming beach, shaded picnic grounds, and a campground that has served East Texas families for generations. The loop provides the best overall orientation to the forest before committing to the longer Four C Trail.

No permit is required for the trail itself. Day-use fee applies for parking at the recreation area (as of 2026). Dogs are welcome on leash.

The Route

Miles 0 to 1.5: Northern and eastern shore. Starting from the parking area near the swimming beach, the trail circles the lake in a clockwise direction. The first section follows the northern and eastern shoreline, with open water views and the CCC-era structures visible across the lake. Longleaf pine and loblolly pine mix with water oak and sweetgum along the shore. Wading birds work the shallows regularly.

Miles 1.5 to 3.0: Southern shore and dam area. The trail reaches the dam and spillway at the southern end of the lake, then follows the quieter southern shore back west. This section tends to be less trafficked than the beach side and has good birding. Prothonotary warblers use the lake edge during breeding season. Wood ducks are common.

Miles 3.0 to 4.5: Western shore and return. The western section completes the circuit, passing through the campground area and returning to the parking lot. The campground sits close to the trail here, making this section slightly more developed in character. The trail returns to the swimming beach and trailhead.

When to Hike

October through April: Most comfortable. Moderate temperatures, lower insect pressure, and good lake visibility. Winter mornings can be excellent for birding.

March and April: Spring wildflowers in the forest understory. Warblers arrive during spring migration, making the lake loop productive for birding.

Summer: Hot and humid. Early morning is the best window if hiking in summer. The swimming beach makes the trailhead worth visiting regardless.

What to Bring

Many hikers carry 1 to 1.5 liters of water for this short loop. Water is available at the recreation area facilities. Insect repellent is worth carrying year-round in East Texas. Binoculars for lake birds. Sunscreen for the open shoreline sections.

Trailhead Access

Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area is on TX-7, about 12 miles east of Crockett and 40 miles west of Lufkin. The paved entrance road leads to the parking area adjacent to the swimming beach. Day-use fee required (as of 2026); passes accepted.

Nearby

The Four C National Recreation Trail begins here and runs 20 miles south to the Neches River. The Ratcliff Campground Nature Walk is a shorter interpretive loop near the campground. The Neches Bluff Overlook Trail offers the best elevated views in the forest. Review Leave No Trace principles and the checking conditions guide before visiting.
