Overview
Lovers Leap is a 600-foot granite wall above the American River canyon near Strawberry, California, and one of the most celebrated traditional rock climbing venues in the Sierra Nevada. The 3.2-mile round trip hike to the summit plateau above the wall offers hikers a view of the wall, the canyon, and the surrounding Eldorado National Forest terrain without requiring any climbing ability.
The trail is accessible from US-50 near Kyburz, making it one of the most conveniently accessed hikes in the forest for drivers approaching from Sacramento or South Lake Tahoe. The lower elevation compared to Crystal Basin trails means earlier season access: the trail is often clear from April onward and stays open well into November.
The Route
Trailhead to Wall Base (0 to 0.8 miles)
The trail begins at the Strawberry Lodge area and climbs through mixed conifer toward the Lovers Leap wall. The approach passes close to the base of the climbing wall, where climbers are often visible working the technical routes. The sound of protection being placed and calls between climbers adds atmosphere.
Slope and Summit Plateau (0.8 to 1.6 miles)
The trail climbs steeply on the upper slope to the summit plateau above the wall. The granite slabs require careful footing when wet. The plateau provides open views of the American River canyon below and the surrounding peaks. The wall itself is visible from the plateau edge.
Return (1.6 to 3.2 miles)
Return via the same route, with care on the descent from the plateau to the base of the wall.
When to Hike
April through November is the full season at this lower elevation. Spring visits coincide with peak climbing season on the wall and provide good wildflower displays in the canyon. Fall light is excellent for photography of the granite wall.
Summer can be hot at this lower elevation in the American River canyon. Early morning starts are recommended.
What to Bring
No water source on the trail. Many hikers carry a liter for this short outing. Sun protection and good footwear for the granite plateau are useful. Binoculars allow better observation of climbers on the wall.

Follow Leave No Trace principles at the base of the climbing wall where concentrated use creates significant impact.
