Overview

The Miners Beach Trail is the most family-friendly hike at Hiawatha National Forest, delivering a Lake Superior sand beach experience in just 3.2 miles round trip. The route starts at the Miners Castle Overlook parking area: itself worth a stop for views of the sandstone rock formation below: and descends to Miners Beach, a wide crescent of pale sand on the Lake Superior shore.

The trail sits on the boundary of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and the Miners Castle formation is technically within the NPS unit, but the parking and much of the forest approach are managed by Hiawatha. The result is a seamless experience with no entry fee and no permit required for day use.

The Route

Miles 0.0 to 0.5: Miners Castle Overlook

From the parking lot, walk to the Miners Castle Overlook first: the views from the top of the sandstone formation look east along the colorful cliffs and west toward Munising Bay. After the overlook, return to the marked trailhead at the east end of the parking lot and begin descending toward the lake.

Miles 0.5 to 1.6: Forest Descent to the Beach

The trail drops through a mixed forest of birch, maple, and hemlock on a moderately graded path. Several sections have exposed roots and rocks: sturdy footwear is helpful. As the trail approaches the lake level, cedar trees become dominant and the air cools noticeably. At mile 1.6, the trail deposits you onto Miners Beach.

The Beach

Miners Beach extends roughly half a mile as a wide sand bar backed by driftwood and forest. The water is remarkably clear: you can see bottom in 10 to 15 feet of water. Cold-water fish hold in the shallows. The colored sandstone cliffs visible to the east give the lake a distinctive teal hue in afternoon light. The beach is the turnaround point; retrace the descent to return.

When to Hike

May and June offer the freshest spring light and wildflowers along the trail. The beach can be windy and cold, but the views are excellent. Bugs peak in June near the forest sections.

July and August are the warmest months for a beach visit, though the parking lot reaches capacity on summer weekends. Mid-week visits avoid the biggest crowds.

September and October bring beautiful fall color and significantly fewer people. The beach is quieter, and the water temperature doesn't change dramatically from summer. Conditions can be moody and atmospheric with occasional lake fog.

What to Bring

Many hikers carry a light jacket even in summer, as the Lake Superior shoreline can be 10 to 15 degrees cooler than inland. Bring water from the trailhead: the lake water requires treatment. Sunscreen is recommended for the beach section. The trail is short enough that elaborate gear is not needed, but sturdy shoes are worth it over sandals given the rooted forest sections.

Trailhead Access

The Miners Castle Trailhead is on Miners Castle Road, which branches off H-58 east of Munising. The road is paved to the parking lot. Vault toilets are available at the parking area. No fee required (as of 2026). Dogs are welcome on leash.

Nearby

The Chapel Loop starts about 2 miles east of the Miners Castle parking lot and offers a longer, more challenging circuit. The Lake Superior Beach Walk near Christmas provides a similar shoreline experience in a different part of the forest. Before your visit, review Leave No Trace principles: keep the beach clean and pack out everything you bring in.

Trailhead Parking

Paved lot at Miners Castle Overlook, free. Fills quickly on summer weekends. Arrive before 9 a.m. on holiday weekends.
