Overview
Galena Creek flows year-round from the eastern slopes of the Mount Rose area through the Reno foothills into the Washoe Valley, and the trail following its upper canyon is the most accessible and family-friendly hiking option in the Reno-area portion of Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The 5.4-mile out-and-back follows the creek through ponderosa pine and aspen forest, gaining 800 feet to an upper viewpoint at 8,100 feet with clear sight lines across the Reno-Sparks valley and the Sierra Nevada crest to the west.
The trailhead at Galena Creek Regional Park is a joint operation between Washoe County and the Forest Service, which explains the facilities (flush toilets, water, maintained parking) unusual for a national forest trailhead. The park itself provides picnic areas and a nature center. The national forest trail departs the park boundary and climbs into the forest proper.
October is the single best month to visit Galena Creek. The aspens along the creek corridor turn brilliant gold in late September through mid-October, creating a fall color display that draws photographers from the Reno-Sparks area every year. The combination of the year-round creek, the aspen groves, and the views toward the Sierra Nevada makes this a deceptively rewarding short hike. See our Leave No Trace guide for creek corridor etiquette that helps protect this highly-visited trail.
The Route
Miles 0 to 1.0 (Park Section): From the Galena Creek Regional Park trailhead, the trail follows the creek upstream through the park before entering national forest land. The path is wide, well-maintained, and shaded by ponderosa pine.
Miles 1.0 to 2.0 (Aspen Corridor): The trail enters the aspen grove section, where the creek is lined with quaking aspen that provide shade in summer and gold color in fall. Several small side pools off the main creek channel are visible from the trail.
Miles 2.0 to 2.7 (Upper Trail and Viewpoint): The trail climbs above the creek corridor through open ponderosa pine to the upper viewpoint at 8,100 feet. The Reno-Sparks valley and Lake Tahoe basin are visible on clear days.
The Return: Descend the same route.
When to Visit
April through November, with October the most spectacular for fall color. Summer is comfortable given the elevation and creek shade. Winter visits are possible on the lower sections but snow may require microspikes on upper sections.
