Overview

Kneff Lake Trail loops a quiet fishing lake in the southern Manistee unit of Huron-Manistee National Forests, through the mix of jack pine, red pine, and northern hardwood that characterizes this part of Lower Michigan. The 4.2-mile circuit is gentle and well-suited for a morning or afternoon outing. The lake provides consistent interest throughout the loop: fishing, birdwatching for lake-associated species, and summer swimming from the accessible shoreline.

No permit required.

The Route

Miles 0 to 1.5: North and west shores. From the campground parking area, the trail follows the north shore through a mix of jack pine and red pine. The lake is visible and accessible throughout. Common loons are present on the lake from May through September.

Miles 1.5 to 3.0: South shore and wetlands. The trail rounds the south end of the lake through a marshy area with sedge and cattail. This is the best section for wildlife viewing: great blue herons and kingfishers are common. The wet conditions here make waterproof footwear worthwhile.

Miles 3.0 to 4.2: East shore return. The trail follows the east shore back to the campground through denser forest.

When to Hike

May through August for lake recreation and birding. October for fall color.
