Overview

The Schweitzer Basin Trail takes advantage of the summer access roads and trails above Schweitzer Mountain Resort in Kaniksu National Forest, looping through the upper ski terrain with panoramic views of Lake Pend Oreille and the surrounding mountains. The 7.0-mile moderate-hard loop gains 1,800 feet from the base area.

The views from the ridge are among the best in the Kaniksu forest: Lake Pend Oreille spreads below to the south, the Clark Fork River valley curves east, and the Selkirk Mountains rise in all directions. The ski slope terrain in summer hosts good wildflower displays in the open areas.

The Selkirk Crest Trail provides access to the higher ridge terrain for those wanting to extend their Kaniksu hiking.

The Route

From the ski area base, the trail climbs via the lower mountain trail network to the upper ridge. The loop follows the ridge crest before descending via a different run or trail back to the base area. The ridge section has the best views.

When to Visit

July through September. The resort terrain is typically snow-free by early July. July and August offer the best wildflower displays. September is excellent for views and fall colors.

Practical Details

No fee for summer hiking at the Schweitzer Mountain trails (as of 2026; verify with resort). Water and restrooms available at the base village. Cell service is good near the resort. Review Leave No Trace principles.

Getting There

From Sandpoint, drive north on US-95 and turn left on Schweitzer Mountain Road. Follow approximately 11 miles to the ski area base. A passenger vehicle can manage the paved road.

Leave No Trace

This trail receives enough use that following Leave No Trace principles is important for preserving the experience for future visitors. Stay on the marked trail to prevent erosion. Pack out all waste. Avoid camping within 200 feet of water sources or the trail. Use existing fire rings only where campfires are permitted, and check current fire restrictions at checking conditions before you go before any visit. The trail and surrounding terrain remain in good condition because previous visitors have respected these norms.

Safety Considerations

The moderate-hard rating reflects the trail's general character under typical conditions. Weather, seasonal snow, and trail conditions can change the experience significantly. Carry the 10 Essentials on any full-day outing. Inform someone of your plans and expected return time before heading out, particularly on longer or more remote trails. Cell service varies throughout Kaniksu National Forest and may be unreliable in canyon bottoms or remote terrain.
