Overview
Lake Pillsbury is the largest lake in Mendocino National Forest, a 2,040-acre reservoir surrounded by mixed oak woodland and gray pine forest in the southern portion of the forest. The 6-mile loop circles the lake through characteristic inner Coast Range terrain, with consistent water views and multiple fishing access points. This is the most family-accessible hike in the Mendocino area, combining gentle terrain with the lake as a consistent destination.
No permit required.
The Route
Miles 0 to 2.0: North and west shores. From the campground parking area, the trail heads counterclockwise along the north shore through blue oak, gray pine, and manzanita. The lake is visible throughout. The character is dry and sunlit on the open hillside sections above the water.
Miles 2.0 to 4.0: South shore. The southern end of the lake has the most secluded sections, away from the main campground. The forest becomes denser here with canyon live oak and some Douglas fir on cooler north-facing sections. Bank fishing access is excellent.
Miles 4.0 to 6.0: East shore return. The east shore returns toward the campground through the more developed recreation area. The boat launch and picnic area are visible across the water.
When to Hike
April through June for wildflowers on the hillside sections. July and August for lake swimming after hiking. September and October for bass fishing and fall color in the oaks.
