The Boulder Lake Trail in Nicolet National Forest loops around Boulder Lake in the forest near Laona, Wisconsin, offering a classic northern Wisconsin lake experience on an easy, well-maintained path. The lake is a focal point for the surrounding recreation area, with swimming, fishing, and campground facilities that complement the trail loop.

The trail circuit provides a full view of the lake from multiple angles, including wooded shore sections and more open areas near the campground. Wildlife activity on and around the lake is a consistent highlight.

The Route

The loop begins at the campground and follows the lake shoreline counterclockwise. The west shore is more forested and quiet; the east shore near the campground is more open with views of the swimming beach and boat ramp. The full circuit is completed in 3.5 miles of mostly flat to gently rolling terrain.

The lake view sections are the main draw. Loons nest on the quieter portions of the lake and can be heard calling in early morning. Osprey regularly patrol the water in summer.

What to Expect

The campground setting means Boulder Lake is one of the more social trails in the Nicolet, particularly on summer weekends when the beach and fishing attract significant visitors. Early morning hiking offers a calmer experience with better wildlife visibility.

The trail is at its most serene in September when the campground quiets and fall color begins in the maples and birches surrounding the lake. The lake surface reflects the changing foliage on calm fall mornings.

Nearby

Laona, Wisconsin, is a few miles east and has basic services. The Camp Five Museum complex in Laona provides a unique look at Wisconsin's logging history. Rhinelander is about 30 miles west with full city services including lodging and restaurants.

Leave No Trace

This trail receives enough use that following Leave No Trace principles is important for preserving the experience for future visitors. Stay on the marked trail to prevent erosion. Pack out all waste. Avoid camping within 200 feet of water sources or the trail. Use existing fire rings only where campfires are permitted, and check current fire restrictions at checking conditions before you go before any visit. The trail and surrounding terrain remain in good condition because previous visitors have respected these norms.

Safety Considerations

The easy rating reflects the trail's general character under typical conditions. Weather, seasonal snow, and trail conditions can change the experience significantly. Carry the 10 Essentials on any full-day outing. Inform someone of your plans and expected return time before heading out, particularly on longer or more remote trails. Cell service varies throughout Nicolet National Forest and may be unreliable in canyon bottoms or remote terrain.
